The House of Representatives is considering legislation for a $200 million
dollar water project for the Rocky Boy Reservation in Northern Montana. Bruce
Sunchild, chairman of the Chippewa Cree tribe's water resources department,
testified before the House Resources Committee on the bill Wednesday.
Robert Fry, convicted of killing a woman who was a member of the Navajo
Nation, was sentenced to death in New Mexico on Wednesday. Fry is also being
charged in the 1998 death of Navajo Nation tribal member Donald Tsosie and
two other deaths that occurred in 1996.
Oklahoma Congressman and Cherokee Nation member, Brad Carson is questioning a
congressional redistricting plan supported by Oklahoma's Republican leaders.
Carson wrote to the governor, the state legislature and the state's two
Republican U.S. Senators in protest. He says the plan dilutes the
representation of Native Americans, Oklahoma's largest minority group.
Well-known Navajo elder Roberta Blackgoat died of natural causes Tuesday
evening in Berkely, California. Blackgoat was in California to attend the
memorial service of activist Arlene Hamilton. A public memorial organized by
the International Indian Treaty Council will be held on May 4th in San
Francisco for both women.
