Hello Carolyn,
I am so glad that I can tell you something about "your Graves". It is no wonder that you are having trouble sorting them out. My grandfather (Addison Dickson Graves, Sr. "Bud") had a sister named Minnie Lee Graves who married Samuel Andy Madison Graves. I knew that Minnie and Sam were cousins, but never knew how close. If our information is correct: I show the grandfather of Minnie to be Isaac Brantley Graves and you show the father of John A. Leonard Graves to be Isaac Brantley Graves, they would be first cousins.
Samuel Andy Madison "Sam" Graves' parents were John Graves b. 1848 d. 1901 and Drucilla Dowdy. My mother remembers Drucilla Dowdy Graves who was nicknamed "Puss". I talked to Rev. Ellis E. Cooper not long ago who also knew her and said that he was related to her and that they called her Aunt Puss and her sister, Aunt Kit.
I show the children of John Graves and Drucilla Dowdy:
1. Samuel Andy Madison Graves b. 2 Dec 1886 d. 13 Jan 1975
2. Pleasant "Pleas" Graves
3. James "Jim" Graves
4. Watson Williams Council Graves
5. Rebecca Idele "Becky" Graves m. a Mr. Adams, don't know his first name.
6. Rachel Graves m. Jake Garrett (My parents knew them and visited their home. Jake and Rachel lived at Kenton, TN.)

You will notice that they gave some and perhaps all of their children three names. This was very common in their era. Of course, most people lost one or more of these names along the way. I think that when we find people that we cannot fit into our genealogy, it may be the same person using one of their other "given" names.

I am sure that I can get more information from my father's first cousins, the children of Sam and Minnie Graves.
I am very interested in receiving all the information that you have on James "Jim".
I will copy to the Graves' List; our communication may help someone else. Wishing you great success in your search.
Bethel Graves Cox "Beth"
