Hello Listers!
I have just joined, and am researching my family tree,
and am trying to find out info on my great-grandfather
William Langley-Ellis. (dropped Langley from surname)
"Jock"
He was born in Yorkshire, but left to join the Royal
Household Calvalry, c.1911+
He was involved in th battle of the Mons, and recieved
a Mons star with a bar reading
"5th Aug-22nd Nov 1914"
As usual with most family trees, there is a story that
he was in line to recieve the Victoria Cross whilst
taking over when a Captain died during the operation
of a charge of a German Camp, but the C.O.'s tent
containing the C.O. & the dipatch with the
recommendation of the VC were blown up, and he never
recieved it.
After the war, the company (c.1920) was ordered to
India, but at the last minute, at the dockside, a
message came for Jock to return to the barracks. He
never found out why.
Posted to Scotland, Dunbar & Fort William, by 1922,
Jock was Quarter Master Sargeant with the 4th Dragoon
Guards (the Blues), and his son "willy" was born
within the Dunbar Castle grounds and was the first boy
to be born there within 100yrs. The town held a
celebration, but unfortuantly he died 5 months later,
and the town's shops closed on the day of the funeral.
By the mid 20's Jock was Regimental Sargeant Major,
and even had the honour of dancing with Queen Mary
1925/6 at the Silver Jubilee Tour at Fort William.
As he was a member of the RHC, he wanted to become a
Beefeater, but was beaten to it by an officer who
pulled rank.
He got a number of medals which were split amongst the
family, but at least 2 of them were thrown away but an
unamed stupud member of the family!!!
I would appreciate it if anyone could answer the
following:
1: Does anyone know of the address (email or snail
mail) of where i can apply for replacement medals??
2: Are there any records which can coincide with the
above which can be viewed/bought over the net/by
post/in person.
3: Does anyone know of my gt-gf?
4: Are there any useful books which could help my
research, concerning the RHC, 4th Dragoon Guards, Mons
battle?
5: Has anyone come across my gt-gf whilst researching
there ancestors?? Were they in the same
command/regiment??
ANY info will be gratefully recieved.
thankyou
Jenny Bostock.
