"Sapper" was the Royal Engineers equivalent of "Private" in the
infantry, Greg. It doesn't imply any specific task within the Royal
Engineers.
You would possibly get some idea of what he did if you knew which type
of company he belonged to within the RE. There were gas companies,
tunnelling companies, signalling companies, Railway construction
companies and so on.
