The memento you have is definitely an unofficial one. The official one,
awarded to the family of all Biritish and Commonwealth (Empire in those
days!) was a circular bronze plaque 120mm in diameter. It shows a standing
figure of Britannia bestowing a laurel wreath on a tablet showing the full
name (as recorded, not necessarily correct) of the casualty, without any
mention of rank, regiment, etc. Also shown, standing in front of Britannia
is a lion (side view), and two doplhins in the background. In the exergue,
below the main design, is a lion cub clutching a fallen eagle. Above all
this are the words HE DIED FOR HONOVR (sic) AND FREEDOM. (SHE DIED... in the
cas of female casualities.) I have not visted the following website but
understand that further information about these plaques may be found there.
