Dear list,
This cautionary tale tells us to check what we find on our travels to the
Somme , Ieper etc. The area around Iper is pretty much cleared but the Somme
is still quite laden with remnants of the Great War. By that I mean lying
atop the ground. I shudder to think how much is beneath.
Certainly on walks I have made , there are live shells lying by the side of
the road (some put there purposely by the farmers) and definately in less
well trodden areas there is stuff just lying there.
These shells are still dangerous. I saw a huge beast near Danzig Alley. It
was about 4 foot long and very fat. I doubt it had been moved since its
arrival.
I gave it a wide berth but why it should go off after 80-odd years just cos I
was nearby , I don't know.
Peace
Peter
