Sue,
On the assumption that you are referring to service during the Great War:
During World War I, The Duke of Wellington's (West Riding Regiment) raised
a total of 22 battalions from the pre-war establishment of two regular, one
reserve and four territorial battalions. The regiment was awarded 63
battle honours during the war and five of its officers and soldiers won
Victoria Crosses. The regiment lost a total of 7,870 casualties during the
Great War.
Those 22 battalions were composed of two regular, one regular reserve,
eight territorial, four territorial reserve, five service, one second
reserve and one labour battalions.
The regular and original territorial battalions will have recruited heavily
from the West Riding of Yorkshire. The regular reserve battalion will have
originally consisted of ex-regulars with a reserve service component. The
remainder will have been found from volunteers (and from 1916 conscripts)
from anywhere since the peacetime county affiliations were abandoned in the
development of a massive military organisation.
Yours aye,
