Ann,
Forestry Units
The Forestry units were largely war raised specialist units tasked with
harvesting timber and preparing timber and lumber for use in military
defences, wooden hutted camps etc. There was a considerable demand for
this material on the Western Front.
On Armistice Day 11 Nov 1918 the forestry units in France and Flanders
included eleven Forestry Companies, Royal Engineers (the 361st to 371st
Companies). One company supported each of 1st, 4th and 5th Armies; the
remained were in the Lines of Communications.
The Canadian Army provided some 80 Canadian Forestry Companies of which 65
were serving in France and Flanders on Armistice Day 11 Nov 1918. These
supported 1st, 3rd and 4th Armies and the remained were Lines of
Communications troops.
There may have been both Forestry Companies, Royal Engineers and Canadian
Forestry Companies serving in the UK and possibly in other theatres were
natural timber resources were available.
Yours aye,
