Sue,
Yes, that is exactly what the "SD" prefix to his service number signified.
The 9th Btn was *not* a "South Down" Battalion. So, If he had that prefix to
his number he must have previously served in the 11th, 12th, or 13th
Battalion.

I've had some problems with sending mail - apologies if you've got this
twice.

I'm gathering information about Bertram JARVIS, Private SD/604, 9th
[Service]
Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, who died on the 11th June 1917.

He came from Herstmonceux, Sussex, and the family have always said that he
was one of 'Lowthers' Lambs' - I have found out that this title was only
given to the men of the 11th, 12th and 13th [Southdown] Battalions. Does the
'SD' in his service number signify that he was at one time in one of the
Southdown Battalions, or am I on the wrong track?

Thanks to a great list,
Sue
