Although 15 days away yet, I wish to acknowledge
the supreme sacrifice my great grandfather made
in the 'Battle of the Somme' at Usna Hill.

9781 L/Cpl William Makinson
B Company, 11th Battalion
Lancashire Fusiliers

His birthday was 8th July and he died age 40
on the 16th July 1916, so that others may live.

Commemorated at the Thiepval Memorial,
although I believe him to be one of the
83 unknown soldiers buried local to Usna Hill redoubts
'Bapaume Post Military Cemetery', Albert.

He was later kept accompanied by other
forbear whom made the ultimate sacrifice;

202575 Private, John Henry Arstall, age 35, 17th September 1917.
29548 Private John Taylor, age 22, 26th November 1917.
235028 Rifleman James Hankinson, age 27, 20th September 1918.
79724 Private Charles W. Arstall, age 23, 23rd September 1918.
891493 Gunner Douglas Wm. Fryer, age 20, 20th May 1941.
3455758 Private Herbert Arstall, age 29, 9th July 1944.

They died comrades in arms so that others may live a free life.
