Subject: [WW1] Missing Grandfather

My husbands Grandfather, William Alexander McLeod, is reputed to have
been killed in WW1. His daughter (my husbands Mother) was born in May
1916 - birth registered July 1916 and was placed in a children's home
in April 1917 (her mother moving to Wigan) According to her birth
certificate her father was a labourer at the time of her
birth/registration suggesting that William was not in the army at this
time. Family lore states that he served with the Scots Guards.
However a search on the CWG site and research done on the medals roll
reveals nothing re: William in this regiment. I have searched other
regiments for his death I.e. London Scottish and The Buffs etc but
cannot find his death.
He was born in 1891 in Scotland (?Tain) His parents were William and
Jane McLeod and he married Ethel Tella in 1910 in Margate, Kent. This
incidentally was where his youngest daughter was born (my husbands
mother)
Is it possible that someone could do a lookup on their Soldiers Who
Died CD for this elusive ancestor. Has anyone any suggestions of
where I can look next? I have even
got a copy of Shot at Dawn and have perused Conscientious Objectors
lists (in local Margate Newspaper) in case the family has something to
hide.
Thank you.
Pam
