Many thanks to Iain, Barry,Malcolm and Andrew for the absolutely wonderful
info on Dads service in the 15th bat Notts and Derby's during the Great War.
I did know that it was a Bantam battalion cos of Dads ht and coincidentally
his Brother George who migrated to Aus in 1912/3 had the same problem. He
was rejected by the Aus army cos of his ht but was accepted in 1916. I
suppose the huge losses made ht less important. He did come over and served
in France and in 1919 whilst waiting for a ship he attended a Brass foundry
in his birthplace of Walsall and was taught, sponsored by the Army, to take
the skill back to Aus. Its interesting to speculate on these things in
family research but their Mum died having a third child with exhaustion and
diagnosed with TB. I suppose the family was then looked after by Dad cos
there's no sign of a remarriage These are the things that must have affected
their growth.
Once again Thanks to you and the list

Eric Bates now in NSW Aus
