Alan,
I think you need to make a return visit to the PRO: The War Diary is best
method the of finding out what the Battery was doing at the time. You MAY be
able to find mention of his death in it but as he was not an officer it is
unlikely that he will be mentioned by name - just a note that "[number]
other ranks killed" on that day. You could also try checking for his service
record but the chances of finding this are slim - 60 to 65% of these were
lost as a result of a WW2 bombing raid.

Heavy Battery, Hants Royal Garrison Artillery (Territorial Force), and he
was killed on 22 Mar 1917 near Ypres. He is buried in Dickebusch New
Military Cemetary, 5km from Ypres town. I would be interested to find out a
little more about the circumstances of his death. I have some superb
photographs of him in full uniform sat on a horse, and I have been told that
it is possible that he would have been involved in moving guns etc out to
the front line - if anyone could clarify his possible role, I'd be
interested to hear! On my last visit to the PRO at Kew, I attempted to look
at any diaries which may be in existence, but ran out of time before I could
find out very much.
