Hello Peter,
I can see I should have been a little more thorough in my first email.
I didn't mention that if he was in the army, it would have been the British Army, and he is not wearing a uniform; but a suit. I thought that in 1918 he probably would have been discharged and given a suit.
I am trying to figure out why he would have been in Australia. The war is the only thing I can think of. There has never been any talk about family members immigrating.
Thanks for your reply, and I apologize for not making myself clear.

There are several possibilities as to why he may have been in Australia
(assuming he was in the army):

* He had recently enlisted in the AIF for overseas duty but had not gone
yet
* He had enlisted in the AIF but for some reason had not been posted
overseas (my wife's grandfather did not get posted overseas for some time
after he enlisted because he had the specialist skill of being a motor car
driver)
* He was not in the AIF, but in the regular army or some other unit and was
engaged in duties at home such as recruitment, depot maintenance etc etc.
(one of my wife's other relatives was engaged on depot duty for a while
because he was not fit enough for fighting duties and as he was a
plumber/tinsmith he would have been good for depot maintenance)

It is usually difficult from the black and white photos to tell what unit
they are in unless it is a clear head and shoulders shot. If he has a cap
on, does it have a badge and if so what does the badge look like ? Does he
have colour patches on his shoulders and if so what shape are they ?

It is often easier to find out what unit he was in from the records. Look
on the nominal roll to see if he was in the overseas AIF - at the War
Memorial Web Site www.awm.gov.au; Look on the Australian Archives site
(either www.naa.gov.au or by the links from the war memorial site) to see if
you can either find him listed or even request his file for a small fee -
there are personnel files for all soldiers even those on depot duty and many
regular army ones.

Good luck

have been in OZ? Is it possible to tell which unit he might have been
serving with, from the time and place he was in OZ?
