Sue - couple of points - firstly, when you say that you received information
from PRO do you mean that literally - i.e. you have received some
information on PRO headed paper ? - What information was it, exactly, and
what process did you go through to get it ?
Have you been given any document codes - if you have a reference beginning
"ADM171/---" then that simply refers to the service medal entitlement, which
wouldn't give you any actual service details anyway. You haven't said
whether your grandfather was an Officer or a Rating (?) - if it's the former
then the Navy Lists would confirm that he served, but little else,* and if
it's the latter then you should have been given document codes beginning
"BT377/---" which would be the actual service record card or cards, - there
could well be more than one record as RNR men often re-enlisted and were
given new service numbers. The record card(s) should give you the boats
served on between whatever dates, and from that you could work out things
such as "did he serve at Jutland ?". (* RNR Officer's service records for
the WW1 period are a long-standing joke at PRO - more missed release
deadlines than you can shake a stick at).
If you could just clarify things a bit then I could probably work out
exactly what information you have been given, and maybe tell you what
questions you should be asking whoever gave you that information.
