The relatives' different ideas to yours about the man's regiment may be
because he changed regiment- the family may have been proud of his
membership of a prestigious or local regiment but at the time the picture
was taken, he may have been somewhere totally different. As an example, my
gt gt uncle started with North Staffs but was moved to the Northumberland
Fusiliers to make up their depleted numbers following the Somme. He wasn't
with them more than a few days before he was killed but he was very proud to
be in a 'swankey' regiment and following that, the family remembered him as
a Northumberland Fusilier rather than anything else.

Just a thought.
