Iain,
This may not be the answer to your direct problem but I can offer this; A
friend of mine was researching her Grandfather, and together we discovered
he had joined and served in the Gloustershire Regt during the early part of
the war. However he was discharged as unfit for service sometime in 1916 and
he returned to Bristol his home town. Prior to the war he had been a
fisherman and so joined the RNR and based in the Bristol and South Wales
area he served on trawlers sweeping the shipping lanes for mines. He was
awarded the Mercantile Marine Medal, Croix de Gurre (is that how its spelt?)
for some action involving a French Ship, plus he had the normal war trio
awarded from his time in the army.
Just a thought or something to work on??
Regards
Peter.
