Chris - I don't specifically know how this was handled from the GRO side,
but on the War Office side, - if the man was reported missing rather than
died of wounds or killed in action, then his status as missing would be
maintained for some time pending possible news of him being a PoW, or
alternatively some firm eye witness evidence of his death being received and
accepted.
Ten to twelve months seems to be about the maximum period before death was
"accepted for official purposes" as "having occurred on or since" the date
that the man was recorded as missing. The missing date was the date used for
SDITGW and CWGC purposes.
