Many thanks to all those who replied to my question about the statement
in "Gallipoli: our last man standing" that Australia was the only
country to "field an all-volunteer army" in WW1. I was wrong about
Canada and New Zealand, but South Africa, Ireland and India, as well as
Australia, had no conscription.
I suppose inaccurate generalisations like that are bound to occur when a
book is hastily written to take advantage of the political and media
hype surrounding the death of the last survivor of Gallipoli.
