Can anyone help? I have been gathering information on 2 Riflemen 3659 J. Elliott & 6562 J Byrne ,both started the war in Aug 1914 with the 1st Btn. The Rifle Brigade, both received "Mons Star" and clasp Aug-Sept. both were KIA in 1918 & 1917 resepectively but when they died they were in the 7th & 12th Btns.
Why were they transfered to other battalions ? Was it because they were experienced and regular soldiers and the other Btns needed them ? or was there other reasons ? Would it be mentioned in the relevant War Diaries ?
Another query - Rifleman Elliott also recieved the MM, the award was published in the London Gazette on the 2.11.1917 what is the time scale between the actual act of bravery and the publication in the Gazette. In this case it looks like Passchendaele (3rd Battle of Ypres) I think the 7th Btn was in that area at the time but I could be wrong.
Any answers fellow listers ?
Yours in anticipation
Anthony L
