> Many thanks to both Trevor and Cedric. The Golden Hill Fort on the Isle of
Wight must be the correct one as my grandfather was posted to 3rd (Reserve)
Battalion at Freshwater Camp on 17 July 1916. I understand that in WW1 the
3rd was the principaI training unit of the D.C.L.I., and assume that the
training of new recruits took place on the I.O.W., prior to their crossing
over to France. I think my grandfather must have remained at Freshwater
until June 1917 when he was returned to Bodmin and, after a medical
examination, was de-mobilised as unfit. He returned home having not been to
France and wore the Silver War Badge which I now have. Thanks to all for the
help.
