I may be wrong but I was led to believe that most C de G were awarded to
units (eg battalions or Field Companies) and assigned to individuals,
usually NCOs or officers at the COs whim - he usually chose men he had
recommended for other honours but who had failed to get them. Others
were awarded for such tasks as being liaison officer with a French Unit
or being particularly helpful to a French town or village and being
recommended by the Mayor.
