Derek - in all likelihood he has been discharged from the Army to Class "W"
Reserve - deemed more use in munitions work, but liable to regular medical
inspection and recall to active service, if required.

If he had overseas service before going to Cl W then he would have medal
entitlement and there is a chance that Cl W would be shown on his medal
records - though that's not certain. Otherwise you would need a surviving
service record. "John Smith", in British WW1 Army records, is a researcher's
nightmare come true !
