George - the Yorkshire Regiment were nicknamed the "Green Howards", or
"Howard's Greens", - goes back to when they were commanded by Colonel Howard
circa 1740. The title was formally adopted post WW1.

Less flatteringly they were also referred to as "Howard's Garbage", and "The
Bounders".

The nearest whole-battalion arrival in France was 10th Bn 10/9/15, so your
man was a reinforcement to any one of several battalions in France the
following month. The medal roll should tell you which one.
