Subject: How to investigate ancestral *possibilities* of WWI service?

Forgive me for asking a question that I am sure
has been asked many times of y'all, but how does
one confirm [or deny!] whether an ancestor served
in WWI with nothing more than a name, address
and DOB? Is there a "Master Index" of medal rolls,
service records, musters, etc, that is sorted by
name which can be browsed?

Thanks in advance and my apologies for what is
a rather open-ended question.
