A DWINDLING BAND

Bob RUDD of Greymouth, New Zealand and ex-British 9th Lancers is
the last WWI serviceman left in New Zealand after Bright WILLIAMS,
the last member of the 1st NZEF (New Zealand Expeditionary Force) to
serve overseas died aged 105y on 13 February 2003 in Havelock North.

As Bob RUDD was 101 years old in 2003, he must have enrolled quite young.

The last Thai veteran of WWI, Second Lieutenant Yod Sangrungruang
died at the age of 106 in October 2003. He was 20 in 1917 when he joined
1284 Thai soldiers who volunteered to fight with the allies in France, and
later received the French Legion of Honour.

Yours, John Wilson (New Zealand)
