FYI, the Canadian practice also was to state "for official purposes presumed
dead on or since ..." For the many missing at 2nd Ypres (22nd April 1915 -
May), the notice was not sent to the next of kin until November 1916. The
death date used was 22nd April, but I know that this is incorrect by a few
days in some cases. Part of the delay was waiting to make sure that the
person was not a POW, though I know of at least once when that mistake was
made, and the second telegram read something like 'Please disregard our
notice that your son was killed ..."
