I am attempting the impossible in trying to find my
grandfathers birth and any help would be appreciated.
I have learnt that he enlisted 19 Jul 1908 at Lady
Smith Barracks AUL. Listed as Private Henry Smith
serial number 1241 Manchester Regiment he served on
active service in 1914 as a medic. Awarded 1914 Star,
British War Medal, Victory Medal. Left service 9 Jul
1920. He later gave his birthdate when joining the
Homegard as 15 May 1892 which would make him 16 when
he first joined the army. The family believed that
when he joined the army he added 2 years on to his age
because he was underage and at the moment I don't know
whether to believe the birth year of 1892 or not. Can
anyone tell me what would be considered the accepted
age to join the army at that time. Is it likely that
he was 14 and added 2 years or he was 16 and should
have been 18.
