More on Hellfire Corner -
To try and stop the German observation, the British erected Canvas Screens
beside the road. The Germans on the ridges had it under constant
observation.
It was also the closest point that the German Army got during the 1918
offensive.
I believe that the original sign riddled with bullet holes still survives.
From memory it is in the National Army Museum.
Hellfire Corner is now a roundabout.
The vast majority of troops and stores went via the Menin Gate, along the
Menin Road past Hellfire Corner.
The Menin Road, Potize-Zillebeke Road and Railway met at Hellfire Corner.
