Hello
Battle of Broodseinde (Ridge) did begin
on 4th October 1917. 44th Battalion were part of 11th Brigade, 3rd Aus
Division, AIF. 1 an 2 ANZAC took part.
The Germans decided to attack on the same day! Many of the Aussies were
shelled whilst in the jump off trenches. The men then met the German
attackers coming the other way. They did though take all of their
objectives but at heavy cost.
As luck would have it the German assault was to start ten minutes after the
British one. Therefore many Germans also got heavily shelled in their
trenches. Although termed The Battle of Broodseinde Ridge, attacks took
place as far as Poelcapelle on the left flank.
The ANZAC troops were in the Broodseinde - Zonnebeke area of the line.
Whilst the 3rd Aus Div did take part, I cannot find 11th Brigade but they
may have been in immediate reserve. Elements of the 3rd Aus Division were
relieved by elements of 66th Division on 5th October. Elements of 66th Div
were also relieved by elements of 3rd Aus at the same time (hope that makes
sense!)
The Battle was to advance some 2,000 yards taking the Gravenstafel spur.
This would clear part of the Gheluvelt Plateau and leave the Broodseinde
Ridge in British hands ready for the next bite. The area was full of German
pillboxes and fortified buildings. On maps it is in the area of Hamburg
redoubt, Levi Cottages and Dab Trench.
Zero hour was 6 am. I am fairly certain that the 10 Aus Brigade went in
first but because of the early losses, the 11th were probably sent in soon
afterwards.
3rd Division - born after a major recruiting drive in early 1916
