Hallo,

I have been researching my GF who was a casualty at 3 rd Ypres in Aug 1917, and recently obtained a copy of The Rifle Brigade Chronicles 1916, which covers the movements and actions of the 1st Btn. R.B. from Aug to Dec 1914. the entry for Dec 19th 1914 reads ;

The account of the Attack on the German positions in Ploegsteert Wood on 19th Dec. has been deleted by the Censor. It will be published in the Chronicle after the War.

Casualties were;

Killed

Captain Hon R. Morgan-Grenville (Master of Kinross)

Captain Hon. F Prittie (Son of Lord Dunally)

2nd Lieutenant A.S.L. Daniell

Wounded

Captain H.L. Riley

Captain J. Micklem

2nd Lieutenant R.D. Baird

Other Ranks

23 Killed

42 wounded

I also have copies of the War diaries covering the same period from Kew, in them ,the same account of the attack is listed as Appendix 12, which is missing. I’ve contacted both the NA and the Archivist at the R.B Museum and there is no trace. Does anyone know if the account was ever published in the Chronicles post war. I have a few copies of RB Chronicles but none containing this report. Why was it originally censored and did the fact that the two leading officers were “Hon” have any bearing ?

Thanks (in anticipation)

Anthony L
