G'day All,
This is my first posting to this list. I admit I have not checked through the archives of the list for an answer to my query, so I'm hoping it is not something that has been recently discussed.
My great uncle was awarded the Military Medal and the Belgian Croix de Guerre during the war. I have the relevant London Gazette entries for these. Unfortunately, his personnel records were either destroyed during the WW2 blitz or subsequently culled, so I have nothing to tell me what the actions were that he was involved him to earn him these awards.
Was there any particular time frame between the events for which the award was granted and the actual granting/gazetting of the award? If possible I would like to get a copy of the War Diaries relating to those events, but I don't particularly want to have to pay for copies for the duration of the war.
My great uncle was in the East Yorkshire Regiment as a regular soldier. He initially served in the 1st Battalion, but was later in the 11th Battalion, of this Regiment. Does anyone known when either of these Battalions served in Belgium? I'm assuming that he did actually serve in Belgium to be awarded the Belgian Croix de Guerre. But I'm happy to be corrected on this. Information at the head of the listing of awards made by the Belgian king suggests that the action concerned could have taken place at any time during the war to the date of the gazetting - 15 April 1918.
I look forward to any assistance anyone can give me on these questions.
