Hello
The first 100,000 volunteers had already started basic training by
September - The 'New Army' 'Kitchener's Volunteers' or Service battalions.
The battalion I am researching were the first Sherwood Foresters 'Service Bn
and was formed 24 August 1914.
The 10 (Service) Battalion Durham Light Infantry was formed 22 August as
part of K1 and was part of 43rd Brigade, 14th (Light) Division. He could
have been in that. Going by his age, is it possible he was a regular before
and came back to train the great unwashed!

Regards
Steve

Hi everyone,

I'm helping a friend with her family history and she has shown me a marriage
register entry for Francis Fothergill, age 45 whose Rank or Profession is
shown as "Blacksmith's Striker" and then under that what looks like "18
Platoon" and then possibly "New Army Durham"

The marriage is dated 13th Sept.1914.

My question is: Had the call for the New Army gone out that quickly after
the outbreak of war? Or am I mis-reading what's in the Rank or Profession
column

regards,

Peter Appleton
