A big hello from Galveston, Texas:
The first Greek Orthodox Church, named The Constantine and Hellen built in the United States in 1862 was built in Galveston, Tex.
My grand father George W. Williams, A Greek, landed here in the early 1860's. He came on the Steam Ship "Havalack" and married my grandmother Annie E. Arnold in 1870, both were about 21 years old at that time. Their first child George Henry was born in 1871 the next child Henry A. was born in 1876. The 1880 US Census show Annie and her two children living at the home of her father, Rev. Levi W. Arnold but no George W. Williams. The 1900 US Census show George W. Williams living in a boarding house in the town of Port Lavaca, Texas and gave his age at 50 years old. He came here in the early 1860's from Wiltshire England. My father George Henry Williams born in 1871, passed away in 1940. He told me about his father and said that he saw very little of him over the years and the last time was around 1912 1n Galveston and he said to my father, if you ever want to contact me go to the Greek Orthodox church in Galveston and they know how to get in touch with me by Greek name. But w!
hat was his Greek name? Over the years several stories were told about our grandfather and it was mentioned that his Greek name was Penetanquishene, or something like that. Question: The name Williams, translation in Greek would be ?????????
Can someone help me? I've been trying to solve this problem ever since my father passed away 62 years ago and I will be 88 years old my next birthday.
Thanks for any help you might give on this subject.
Freeman R. Williams
Born 1916 in Galveston, Texas
