DENVER, CO -- Ethel Manukas Sophocles, 91, of Denver, died Aug. 21.

She was born in Lancaster, PA July 18, 1912. Her parents, Nicholas and Lena Manukas, emigrated from Chios, Greece. She and her two brothers, George and James, resided in Trenton.

She graduated at age 18 from the Pennsylvania School of Optometry and practiced in Princeton and Yardville, becoming the state's first female optometrist. In 1942 she married Aris M. Sophocles, who became a physician and surgeon in Trenton and Yardville.

Her children, Aris Sophocles Jr., MD, JD, and Leona Sophocles Brownson live in Colorado. Her grandchildren are Alexis Leona Sophocles, Aris Sophocles III and Athena Eleni Sophocles Brownson.

She will be remembered for her warmth intelligence and humor. The family invites contributions in her name to the St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Trenton.
