Hi Sean in Oxford,

I have searched under Io, Tz and Ts (all Greek substitutes for J) in our
local phone book (which unfortunately only covers half of the Pelopponesse
and doesn't include Hydra) looking for a name similar and I couldn't find
anything that is remotely like Jostlear or Jostleres. Also had a look at the
towns on Hydra in the road atlas as sometimes villages are named after the
families that are settled there, again no luck.

Have you been to Hydra? It would be best if you could go there and talk to
the locals etc, look at church records and also have a look at headstones in
the cemetaries, you might be able to pick up a clue. The bright side is that
Hydra is small with only a few villages, so everyone will know everyone
elses family histories and business!!

Good luck
Therese

Subject: [GREECE] Jostlear of Hydra

Dear list,

My great-great-grandfather emigrated to Melbourne, Australia in the late
1850's from Hydra, Greece, having been born there to Emmanuel and Zoe in
about 1829. His name was Athanasius Jostlear (known as Thomas). Upon coming
to Australia Athanasius appears to have anglicised the family name and the
original we are now not sure of. The surname was also once recorded as
Josleres and in fact the family also used the surname Johnson for a period.
This makes genealogical hunting very difficult indeed!

I am wondering if anyone on the list might have any suggestions as to what
the original surname might have been, taking into account the region my
ancestor was from. Is Josleres or Jostlear quite similar to an actual Greek
surname, as I have been told that 'J' is not in the Greek alphabet and
therefore either of these variations could not be the original true form.

Thanks in advance,

Seán
