A small revision here: "Marjorie Holden is not in the process of finding
out" vis a vis the Sokolka records.. She is in the process of trying to find
out If anyone else is interested in my results, you should know it will be
a while before I can write. House full of grandchildren and summer plans for
travel etc. Hope to dig in before the snow falls. Greatly appreciate all
the information. And wish to emphasize that I gave TW no money. But I
thought we had an understanding, and he faded away. I am under the
impression that there are things someone on the spot could investigate in
Sokolka. I have a book he (TW) wrote which includes names on headstones.
One has the name of someone in my family on it. Collaterals were definitely
there before WW I, so it is even possible that there may be people in town
who remember them. I am pretty sure there are land records somewhere;
possibly vitals and draft registrations. (Probably not probate because the
Halperns were superstitious about making wills.) But surely enough late 19th
Century, early 20th Century stuff so that there should be a trail to
something. However, this is the kind of research that is more like detective
work than library work. Anyone know a Polish detective who reads and writes
Russian, Hebrew and Yiddish?
