Samuel B. HARBEN, 1st child of Nathaniel B. and Barbara Burdine Mauldin

1. Samuel B HARBEN (CSA) was born on JUN 26 1819 in SC. Died on DEC 19
1901 in Dawson Co, GA. Buried in New Hope Bapt Cem, Dawson Co, GA.
Samuel was a boy of about ten when his family moved from South Carolina
to the Indian frontier of Georgia.

Samuel B. Harben (1819-1901) Capt. Co H (also designated C), 11th
Battn Georgia State Guards, referred to as Capt. Harbens Company
"Dawson Infantry." Mustered at Dawsonville on July 14, 1863.

He mustered in at Camp Georgia near Atlanta on June 6, 1864, and was
elected Captain of Co A, 4th Reg., 2nd Brigade of GA Militia. This unit
was made up of men from Dawson, Lumpkin, and White Counties.

"During the final Federal invasion of Georgia in 1864, Governor Brown
repeatedly sent what state troops and reserves he could spare to
suppress resistance to the Confederacy and the growing lawlessness in
North Georgia. He also authorized, and protected from the Confederate
draft, several battalions and one regiment of local militia cavalry,
popularly called "home guards," to patrol for slave revolts and, in the
mountain counties, for deserters. However, even Confederate critics of
these men claimed that the officers and men were themselves deserters
and that their actions were indistinguishable from that of the
bandits." Robert Scott Davis, "Memoirs of a Partisan War" There is
nothing in the record to suggest that Capt. Harben was a deserter. The
status of his men will require research.

After the war he became a preacher and he farmed.

unlocked, got the cash and went home. Of course everyone in the
community was aware of this routine.
