TRADITION
by Joyce McCarthy
How do traditions get started? For instance, the marshmellows on top of sweet
potatoes? I think that was the only way someone could get their children to
eat what they could only afford for Christmas.
Well in our little background there is a story about tradition.
Once upon a time, way back, there was a woman standing in her kitchen.
Actually, lets jump to modern day. I was standing in my kitchen ready to cook
the turkey for my our newlywed Christmas. Oh I was so proud to get to do this.
So I defrosted the turkey and took care of it the was I was suppose to, even
cutting off both the legs and placed them towards the back of the turkey.
Tradition. Everyone in my family did it. I never questioned why? Then my new
husband walks in with this puzzled look on his face and asks me, 'why did you
cut the legs off?' I stood there trying to come up with something clever like
it will cook better or taste juicer. Really I had no clue so I said
"Tradition" I then called my Mom and asked her, "why do you cut the legs off
the turkey before cooking it?" There was mom, her daughter had called her with
an important question and all she could come up with was, "Tradition." So
guess who mom called? Grandma! Which is the woman standing in her kitchen a
long time ago, at the top of this story.
There she was, in her kitchen, about to cook her first turkey. She was young
and also a newlywed during war time. They had little money and few cooking
pans. She proceeded to find the biggest pan she had. It was still too small.
So to make the turkey fit the pan she cut the legs off and placed then
decoratively towards the back. She used that pan for years. And so ends the
story of "Tradition".
