Reed's Gap is located where the town lines of Durham, Middlefield and
Wallingford CT come together.

There is and was trap rock mined there. A small village was built for
the employees who worked there. I don't have at my finger tips the name
of the original settler there and it is not in the 'History of Durham
1662-1866. A Solomon Reed lived there in the 1920s-30s.

The Statue of Liberty has trap rock from Reed's Gap for its base. A
train leaves about 2 p.m. each week day (I'm told by a resident of
Durham) with about 100 cars loaded with trap rock that goes to New
Haven. It is on Route 68. The town of Wallingford no longer allows
removal. It is presently owned by Tomasso Co.
