Subject: [GenConnecticut-L] HALE COLLECTION OF GRAVESTONE INSCRIPTIONS
Date: Wed, 2 Dec 1998 14:50:42 EST
Hello, all. I am sending a copy of a message received on this list several
months ago, about the HALE COLLECTION OF GRAVESTONE INSCRIPTIONS. The
information was sent by the very public-spirited . It was
so useful I had to save it. Now I see that listers are out recording
inscriptions, and I thought I'd better send this message again so no one is
duplicating work already done by the HALE group.

Just to let everyone know that there are sources for Connecticut gravestone
inscriptions which have already been compiled for most cemeteries across
Connecticut. The WPA did a very large project about 1934-37 - which included
all gravestones standing at that time - referred to as the Hale Collection of
Gravestone Inscriptions. This can be found on a card index (by surname and
given name) at the CT State Library in Hartford. It is also available on
microfilm from your nearest LDS (Mormon) Family History Center.
The website address for Connecticut State Library, History & Genealogy Unit
will give more information on this wonderful resource, plus others.. If your
ancestor died more recently than the mid 1930s, then you will need to contact
(or go to) the cemetery in question.

Another website that can be very helpful when looking for information is the
Connecticut Gravestone Network - anyone gathering data from old cemeteries
should check here also - the work may already have been done by someone - or
you can help them to add to their large, growing database.. Annual membership
is VERY reasonable and they are a great group - they have symposiums, cemetery
gatherings and all kinds of workshops (on site) throughout the year..

Good luck to all!
