POWERS Jarathmael; CT? > Steuben Co., NY; 1800s
Recently, I saw a posting that gave a general rule regarding will
witnesses. At least one of the witnesses to a man's will was
usually a kinsman to the wife to protect her dower right. Given
this possibility, I am seeking to prove or refute that Jarathmael
POWERS and/or Israel B. PERSONS were kinsmen of Louisa (_____)
STREETER.
Jarathmael POWERS, son of Moses and Eunice (_____) POWERS, b. 22
March 1785; m. Esther _____; father of Jarathmael POWERS Jr. and
Eunice (POWERS) SHERER, wife of David SHERER (1810-1883).
Israel B. PERSONS, m. Priscilla _____.
Thomas-1 STREETER (William-A, Richard-B), son of William-A and
Ann (_____) STREETER, was b. probably at Dunnings Farm in the
parish of East Grinstead, Sussex, England on 22 [or 25] June 1753.
Thomas was christened in the Parish Church of St. Swithun at East
Grinstead on 16 June 1754; emigrated from London, England to "New
Providence," on the site of modern-day Kanona in the township of
Bath, Steuben Co., NY in late 1794; moved to the Town of Cameron in
1813; and finally settled in Marshall's Hollow near the Hamlet of
Adrian in the Town of Canisteo, Steuben Co., NY. Thomas d. 18 Sep
1831; his will was witnessed by Jarathamael POWERS and Israel B.
PERSONS.
Thomas was m. second, probably at Bath, NY about 1807, to Louisa
_____, who was b. in CT 25 June 1773 and d. in Canisteo, NY on 12
Jan 1844. She was probably a daughter, sister or widow of one of
the other CT pioneers who came to Bath around the turn of the
century, perhaps via Eastern NY or Pennsylvania. Thomas was a
Baptist Minister; Louisa was probably a Baptist by birth or
conversion. Variations of Louisa's name in some records include
Lovica and Lovisa.
In the 1830 census, Thomas STREETER's immediate neighbors were
Benjamin CROSBY, Jerathmael POWERS, and Israel B. PERSONS.
Following Thomas-1 STREETER's death in 1831, his sons continued to
be associated with POWERS and PERSONS.
William C.-2 STREETER, witnessed the will of Lemuel SEARL with
Benjamin B. CROSBY and Jarathamael POWERS in 1839.
John-2 STREETER bought sixty-one acres of Israel and Priscilla
(_____) PERSONS 12 June 1839 for $500 and later purchased land from
Jarathamael and Esther (____) POWERS and Nathan and Nancy (HALLETT)
CROSBY. He also sold land to Nathan CROSBY, Jarathamael POWERS
Jr., and George W. HADLEY.
I am seeking all genealogical and biographical details for the all
of the families documented above including their ancestors,
children, and grandchildren and the spouses thereof, including the
full names of those spouses' parents.
