Subject: [GenConnecticut-L] DEXTER FAMILIES IN KILLINGLY, CT, IN 1700'S ???
Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 11:12:13 -0500
Hello, I'd like to put out another request for information on the origin
of several generations of DEXTER families living in Killingly, CT, in the
1700's and 1800's.
My great-great-grandfather, JOHN DEXTER, was born there in 1837.
Reportedly, his father was WILLIAM DEXTER, born there in 1795. (His wife:
Eunice (PARK) Dexter)
Reportedly, his father was THOMAS DEXTER, born ???. (His wife: Leah
(PHILLIPS) Dexter)
(I have also seen mention of a Mary Jane Dexter born in Killingly in 1836.)
At some point, John Dexter married Mary Anna Clark, who was born in 1837 in
Westport, MA. I don't know where they lived initially, but they could
have lived in Boston, MA, for a time. From about 1880 to about 1900, they
lived in Melrose, MA.
I have found out that Mrs. Mary Dexter died in early 1899 and was buried in
Killingly, CT. Between 1899 and 1900, Mr. John Dexter sold the family home
in Melrose and moved..... I do not know where he went (at Age 62).
So far, I only know of one daughter, and I don't yet know her name. But,
as a teen-ager or young adult, she became pregnant without benefit of
marriage. She delivered a baby girl in February 1889; I don't know where
the birth took place. The family story is that this Miss Dexter was
killed in a train accident while traveling. Where ??
Since Mr. and Mrs. John Dexter adopted the baby in March of 1892, I will
guess that their adult daughter was killed in either 1890 or 1891.
In addition to finding out the origin of the Dexter families in Killingly,
CT, I would very much like to find out their daughter's first name. (This
would be the full name of my grandmother's birth mother.)
I would also like to find out where John Dexter went ..... when he left
Melrose, MA. He was a Jurist in a local Courthouse, and he was a
real-estate agent. So, he must have had a little bit of money to travel
with. And, I'd like to know when and where he passed away.
I'd also like to find out where and when ..Miss Dexter..., my
great-grandmother, passed away.
Thank you for your time, Betty
(near Lowell, MA)
