William Hamlin, the father of this numerous family was
born in Middletown, CT as his progenitors had been, for
four generations. He was at Charlestown, NH as early as
l803. He was a deacon of its church. He was a taverner
as hotel keepers were then called and furnished plenti-
fully to his customers both of food and beverage common
at that day. His venerable father and mother came to
live with him at an advanced age and they are buried in
Charlestown village cemetery. His father was always
called Captain Hamlin, a title which it is said that he
received in connection with military service in the war
of the Revolution. Mrs. Lydia Grout was known to say
this couple "very entertaining and very excellent and
ememplary people".
