What a great summary of a complex, often confusing, topic that always
seems to be coming up!
Thanks!!

Subject: [GenConnecticut-L] Re: Ancestry and Rootsweb
Hi Char, Jim and all others,
I received messages from Char and Jim and thought they might be
better
answered this way, as there seems to be some confusion between the
two
sites.
To begin with, yes, Ancestry does own the Rootsweb server, but they
are
run as two separate entities, (Rootsweb = FREE, Ancestry =
Subscription),
the two site are interlinked and a search may produce hits in both,
but from
the Rootsweb main page you can choose which one to search.
The http://www.ancestry.com site, the subscription part, has the
copies of
transcribed vital and Church records, most of which have been
microfilmed by
the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, i.e.. Mormons, and
images
of census records, Town histories etc. it has no submitted records
from
outside contributors. These subscriptions help to keep the Rootsweb
part
free, it was getting much to large for the original owners to keep
up,
Ancestry took it over to keep it online. (short answer to long story,
nuf
said)
Jim, you say you received a call from Ancestry to renew your
subscription,
and the cost was $80 plus another $19 if you want to get the Obit
subscription. There are several different databases you can subscribe
to, if
you only want census records you can get just that, or the
England/Ireland
database, etc. but you don't need any subscription to access the
information
on Rootsweb.
Char, You say your cousin put all your family history online at
Rootsweb
and you have to join Ancestry.com to view it? The only place to
upload
something like that is called World Connect if you access it through
Rootsweb http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/ , or Ancestry Family
Trees
through Ancestry at http://www.ancestry.com/trees/ , one database,
different
doors, and you can freely search it or any of the other databases on
Rootsweb, either individually or all at once from the main page at
http://www.rootsweb.com/ , including the USGenweb Project
http://www.usgenweb.org/ , and Archives
http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ ,
WorldGenweb http://worldgenweb.org/ and their Archives
http://www.worldgenweb.org/archives/ and hundreds of websites on the
freepages (personal websites, created by individuals, such as my own,
link
below), that are housed there. I also have 19 town pages in CT, part
of the
USGenweb on my site. I control what is on them and I can delete them
anytime
I wish, they are not controlled by anyone but me.
This statement is made by Ancestry, "When you submit your family
tree you
help the Ancestry World Tree grow. Your file will remain your own.
Only you
can change, update or remove your work from the tree, and Ancestry
pledges
never to sell your data or charge anyone to search the Ancestry World
Tree."
The announcements about the Barbour Collection that Jane Devlin
has been
announcing to this list is being put on her website housed at
Rootsweb
(remember, Rootsweb = FREE). She has a fantastic site with so much
information it will take you considerable time to go through all of
it, see
for yourself http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~jdevlin/ We
owe
people like Jane and Coralynn a great deal for giving us access to so
much
information and we can't thank them enough for what they do.
I hope this helps.
Best wishes, Kathy
