Hi Mary,

Thanks so very much for this information. This is exactly what I was looking
for. I didn't know the Peshtigo name. That is why I couldn't find anything
on it with a search engine.

Hi Janet,

This is probably referring to the area of northeastern Wisconsin burned in
the Great Peshtigo Fire of 1871. You can find out more about the Peshtigo
Fire at http://www.peshtigofire.info/. It happened on the same day as the
Great Chicago Fire, and, because Chicago was a bigger city, the Chicago fire
got all of the press. The Peshtigo Fire was actually much larger, burned
much more area, and killed many more people.

A very good book about the Peshtigo Fire was published in 2002, FIRESTORM AT
PESHTIGO: A TOWN, ITS PEOPLE, AND THE DEADLIEST FIRE IN AMERICAN HISTORY,
by Denise Gess and William Lutz (New York: Henry Holt and Co.).

Would like to find any information about the "burnt section" near Langlade
in
1873. Why was it called "burnt section"?

Am particularly interested in the saw mills in "burnt section".

Thank you,
Janet
