Subject: Re: [HAGLER] Status Report on the HAGLER Mailing List
Date: Mon, 31 Jan 2005 11:10:03 EST
It's been awhile since I wrote to the list. Maybe we have some new people who
can help me. I'm still looking for Henry Jackson Hagler's parents.
I was born Gwendolyn Ruth Hagler (always called Gwendy)
My provable Hagler line starts with GGGrandfather: HIS PARENTAGE IS MY
PROBLEM!
Henry Jackson Hagler b. 23 Feb. 1822 Jackson Co. Ill (according to grave
stone rubbing, however cenceses indicate 1827 more likely), d. 10 Nov. 1901
Cambria, Williamson Co. Ill m. 23 Feb. 1865 Elizabeth Shaver b. 10 Nov. 1844 (49)
Jackson Co. Tenn. c. 29 Oct. 1937 Williamson Co., Ill.
Their son:
Grove Hagler: b. June 1867 Williamson Co. Ill d. 1 Feb. 1943 Wiener,
Poinsett Co. Ark. m. 21 Mar 1889 (Mary) Annis Beavers b. 16 Aug. 1867 Williamson
Co. Ill d. 29 Sept. 1955 Williamson Co. Ill.
Their Son:
Howard Hagler b. 11 Jan. 1890 Cambria Ill. d. Mar. 1982 Cambria Ill. m. 23
Feb. 1910 Linnie Chlora Keys b. 19 Feb. 1892 Christian Co. Kent. d. 19 Nov.
1970 Cambria, Ill
Their Son:
Victor Wayne Hagler b. 13 Feb. 1911 Cambria, Ill d. 3 July 1995 Cambria Ill
m.28 Aug. 1937 Gladys Margaurette Jones b. 30 July 1915 Onarga, Ill d. 13
Sept. 1972 Worthington Ohio.
Their Daughter:
(Me) Gwendy Baldwin b. 3 Jan. 1939 Cleveland Ohio
I cannot connect Henry J. with any parents. He apparently went by several
names.
1850 Jackson Co.Census = Jackson Hagler (b.1827, age 23)
Marriage entry Williamson Co. 1865 = Henry J. Hagler
1870 Williamson Co. Census= Jack Hayler (Hagler), listed with correct wife
and children (b. 1824, age 46)
1880 Williamson Co. Census= Thomas J. Hagler, listed with correct wife and
children (b.1828, age 52)
Grave stone = Henry Jackson Hagler b. Feb. 23 1822, d. Nov. 10 1901
Dates on his grave stone do not match any of the census records. Due to
court house fires there is a lack of records earlier than 1839 in Jackson Co.
Obviously H.J. had to come from somewhere and since he was born in Jackson
Co. Ill he had to come from one of the first Haglers to come to Illinois.
The big question for me still is who are the parents of Henry Jackson Hagler.
Through a process of elimination, one suggestion is that he is from the
first marriage of Paul (b. 1804) since all records prior to about 1839 were
destroyed in a court house fire (I am told), I am left with needing someone to find
a Bible, church record or something that ties him to someone. There is a
Penelope Hagler listed in 1850 census as being 15 and living with Henry J. Hagler
(they are living next door to Mathias and his family, could be a sibling).
Mathias and wife are mentioned in the 1840 censes as having children living
with them that are too old to be theirs. Ages correspond with ages of H.J and
Penelope 10 years later.
This is why I feel they are siblings of Mathias or closely related and being
cared for by him and his wife in 1840.
She (Penelope) is listed first and therefore head of household. She marries
John Barnett of Union Co. in 1854. She and H. J. could be siblings from
Paul's first marriage, who moved out to make room for an expanding family when he
remarried, or, second suggestion, they could be siblings, and children of the
older Paul, who were scattered after his death. I'm reaching here.
I have as my top guess for a father for my Henry Jackson Hagler
Paul born 1789 NC, ( Not the younger Paul b. 1804 whose first wife was
Elizabeth
Clutts, and second wife was Charity Cook as noted in the 1850 census).
Older Paul apparently arrived at the same time as John, Peter, & Philip. In
1818/19 Peter 31, Philip 41, and Paul 29, bought land.
1820 census shows John 39, Peter 33, Philip 43, & Paul 31.
They are all there in 1830, but the older Paul is absent in 1840 and beyond.
According to 1850 census Henry J. (Jack) father was born in NC and mother in
Kentucky, but as with a lot of the information about him this (mother's birth
place) could be in error. I'm inclined to go along with the birth place of
the father, but in looking through all the census records for the whole state
in 1850 (unless MOM is deceased too) there are only two single females of the
appropriate age living with younger persons.
Elizabeth Hagler aged 65 born in NC, living with Henry P. Hagler b. Ga.
48 and his family. They are found in Madison (roll #110 Page 559)
Elizabeth Hagler 63 born in NC living with Harrison 28 born in Ill and
wife Rachel also Madison Co.
Since my H.J. was born between 1822-28 (depending on which census or grave
stone is correct) in Ill. The reference to Harrison born in Ill and having an
older women living with him and his family, leans me a bit toward him as a
sibling. That still doesn't tell us who the father is. However if we discount the
birth place of the mother then any of the original 4 Haglers would be the
father.
In any case: Questions are as follows:
1, Does anyone have a chart that shows the children of the original 4.
2, Does anyone know anything about the Older Paul?
3, Does anyone know anything about Harrison or Henry P. in Madison Co., as
shown in 1850 census, and the older women living with them?
Henry J. must have had parents, he could not have just appeared, well I don't
think so anyway.
If possible keep these people in the backs of your minds when working on the
Hagler line and if something jumps off a page at you, please take note and
send it along.
I will be eternally grateful,
Gwendy Baldwin
P.S.
Oh, the census information I have is, 1950 actual image. The 1870, 1880 are
look ups provided years ago, by who, I don't know. On the Internet I found and
index to 1860 with a Jackson Hagler listed, in Carbondale township, and get
this, he is 23. So if this one is mine, now I have a 10 year difference in the
ages. Oh heck.

This YOUNGER ....... PAUL, would seem to be too young to be the father of
Henry J. IF Henry J. was born in 1822 ?????
however here is the information on
him that I have.
