I am still trying to find the parents of Henry Jackson Hagler born 1822 or 27 in Jackson County Ill.
Censuses from 1850-1900 state his parents were born in Nth Carolina and Virginia. (other info states Tenn for mother).
1850 he is in a home with Penelope Hagler (14), he states he is 23. She is listed first, therefor head of household. They are living next door to Mathias Hagler 35, Rebecca 34 and children ranging from 6/12 to female 10 years old.
In 1840 the same Mathias 20-30 has with him a wife 20-30,one boy 10-15, 1 girl 5-10 and a girl 0-5. This leads me to believe that Penelope may be their oldest child and HJ is living with or visiting Mathias probably an uncle or other relative.
Penelope marries John Barnett of Union Ct. in 1854, HJ marries Elizabeth Shaver in 1865 (apparently only marriage). No record of him from 1850-1865.
In 1850 cenus we also find Allen 47 from NC, wife 43 Tenn. with children Mathias 18, William 14, Sussanah 12,Allen 10, Isacc 6, John 4, A... 2 and John 69 NC.
In looking at 1840, we find Allen with wife 30-40, 2 males under 5, 1 male under 10, 1 female under 5, 1 under 10, 1 10-15. In matching this up with the 1850 .... if ....HJ was visiting or living in the household where his is noted (next door to Mathias & Rebecca) he could easily be the son of Allen.
My problem for the past 30 years...is that I can find no proof. The court house burned down and no one from any of the 4-5 first Hagler (1820-1830) arrivals in Illinois has claimed HJ. He may well have been a rogue any no one wants him. But I can't get any further back in time or connect him to the older Haglers unless someone helps me. He could be from almost any one of them.
