LEWIS HALE OF TENNESSEE
Dear Cindy
Please post this message to your subscribers.
I am looking for a proper home to send some papers I copied by mistake over
20 years ago at the National Archives in Washington, DC. While doing research
on Lewis HALE, I came across a one inch thick file on a Lewis HALE of
Tennessee. I was so totally absorbed by the story told by the papers that I
didn't realize until later that I was viewing a file for the wrong person. I
had intended to research the Lewis HALE of Elk Creek, Grayson Co., Virginia.
I'll send the papers, about 30 legal size sheets in all, to anyone who
requests them providing they can give me the correct answers to a few
questions. The questions will give me reasonable assurance that the papers
will be going to a descendant of the subject Lewis HALE. I would like to be
reimbursed for the postage, probably about $5.00. The papers are described
briefly below.
This particular Lewis HALE of Tennessee was a veteran of the War of 1812. In
1871, he applied for and was awarded a survivors pension of $8.00 a month.
Unfortunately, his pension was revoked later because a concerned citizen sent
a letter to the pension board stating that Lewis HALE had been a rebel for
the southern cause during the Civil War. After many letters of support from
friends, lawyers, former army associates and others, it was finally proved to
the pension board that Lewis had not been disloyal and the pension was
reinstated, to his widow. The above story, plus more, are in the papers I
copied.
If anyone reading this wants to receive the Lewis HALE papers, please answer
as many of the questions on the list below and return the entire list to me
at . The first person having the most correct answers
within a 30 day period after this notice is posted will be asked by me for
their address so the papers can be mailed. In all cases, the correct answers
will be based on the information found in the papers.
Thank you, Bob Hillskemper
