Though I haven't found a connection for my Haley's in Virginia I will tell
you what I was told by my grandparents about the Irish connection,
realinzing though that I am still trying to document this information.

My grandparents Harold Jarvis Haley and Ellen Adina Johnson (Uppgard) were
primarily from the Templeton, Mass. area though Harold always said that
somewhere back in time he had Irish roots, mentioned an Irish fisherman.
Later they said they thought he might have been a seal fisher. Then they
told me that the Haleys may have come through Deerfield. They did tell me
that at least my younger of the two Jacob William Oscar Haleys was born in
Deerfield, NS. I have found Haleys there, though not connected yet. There
is a Deerfield, Mass also, the historic town but I cannot locate Haleys
having been there. Also, if you look in Maine you find Haleys and it makes
sense that any immigration from Nova Scotia across the channel could have
landed at Bar Harbor or Portland and eventually migrated down to
Massachussetts.
This is a fair amount of conjecture at this point but I feel that this may
be at least one way of accounting for Irish immigration, and Nova Scotia is
a fishing area. Hope it helps someone, I am still a long way from solving
my line.
